Which of these apps do you actually need?

Not all of them. Charging in New Zealand is split across a handful of operators, each with its own app, account and payment method. What you install depends on where you drive, not on which app is best.

A useful way to think about it is three layers. The first is a map showing every charger regardless of who owns it, so you can see what actually exists near you. The second is the network apps for the operators you use, because those are what start a charge and take payment. The third is a route planner, which only earns its place once you drive beyond your car's range in a day.

Most drivers end up with one map app, one or two network apps, and a planner they open a few times a year. If you charge at home overnight — how the large majority of New Zealand EV owners charge — you may open these only when you travel.

Maps and planning

PlugShare

The closest thing to a complete map of New Zealand charging. It lists chargers from every operator on one map, including free destination chargers at hotels, i-SITEs, shopping centres and council car parks that never appear in any single network's own app. Its real value is the check-in history: drivers leave comments when a charger works or fails, which matters more in New Zealand than in denser markets, because in much of the country the next charger may be a long way further on. It does not start charges on most networks — treat it as the map you look at first, not the app you pay with.

A Better Route Planner (ABRP)

Plans a long drive around charging stops rather than just distance. Enter your vehicle and it estimates consumption from speed, elevation, temperature and load, then tells you where to stop and how long for. Elevation matters here more than most places: the Desert Road, the Kaimais, the Lindis Pass and the Haast will all take more out of a battery than a flat-distance calculation suggests, and ABRP accounts for that. Most useful for inter-city and South Island trips.

Charging networks

These are the apps that start a charge and take payment. You will need an account with each operator whose chargers you use, though many sites now also accept a contactless card.

ChargeNet

The largest public fast-charging network in New Zealand and the one most likely to matter on a long drive. ChargeNet built much of the original inter-city DC network, and its sites are spaced along the main routes on both islands. If you install only one network app, this is usually it.

OpenLoop

A network operating across a range of sites, often in partnership with local lines companies and councils. Coverage is patchier than ChargeNet's but fills gaps in particular regions, which is exactly when you need it.

Z Energy

Chargers at Z service stations, which brings the practical advantage of amenity: the site already has toilets, coffee and somewhere to sit, and that matters more than expected on a twenty to forty minute DC charge. Coverage is concentrated where the stations are, so check the map rather than assuming your usual Z has one.

bp charge

The same idea from bp, using existing forecourt sites. Between Z and bp, fuel retailers are steadily becoming a meaningful part of the DC network, and their locations tend to be where people already stop.

Meridian Energy

Meridian's involvement is more about the electricity behind the charging than a large public network of its own, and it offers EV-specific plans worth checking if you charge at home. Since home charging is where most kilowatt-hours come from, your retailer's plan can matter more to your annual cost than any public network does.

Tesla

The Tesla app manages a Tesla vehicle — charge state, preconditioning, locking — and Supercharger access. Selected Supercharger sites in New Zealand have been opened to other brands, billed through the same app, so it is worth checking whether the Superchargers on your route are open sites even if you drive something else.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account with every charging network?

Not usually. An increasing number of New Zealand chargers accept contactless card payment, which is enough for a network you will use once on a trip. An account is worth having for the operators you use regularly, because it generally gives cheaper rates, charge history, and the ability to start a session from your phone if the card reader fails. Most drivers need two accounts, not six.

Which app should I install first?

PlugShare, because it shows what exists near you across every operator, including free destination chargers that no network app lists. Once you know which chargers you will realistically use, add the app for those specific networks. Installing everything before you know your charging pattern leaves you managing accounts you never open.

Are these apps free?

The apps are free to download. What you pay is for the electricity, at a rate set by the network operator rather than the app. A Better Route Planner is the exception worth knowing: core planning is free, with a paid tier adding live vehicle data and more detailed options.

Is charger coverage a problem outside the main centres?

It is thinner, and it is the main reason to plan rather than improvise. The inter-city routes on both islands are covered well enough for ordinary travel, but some regions rely on a single charger in a town, and a charger that is occupied or out of service is a real problem when the next one is fifty kilometres away. This is where PlugShare check-ins and a route planner earn their place, and why arriving with a reserve rather than on fumes is worth the extra stop.

Do I still need these apps if I charge at home?

Less than you might think. With off-street parking and overnight charging, home covers most everyday driving and you may only open a charging app when you travel. The apps matter most for drivers without off-street parking and for trips beyond a single charge.

Does using public charging change what road user charges I pay?

No. Road user charges are levied on distance travelled, not on where or how you charge, so they are identical whether you charge exclusively at home or exclusively on public DC.
